On a jagged coastline in Central California, brown pelicans take flight to feed on a vast school of fish just offshore. The water churns in whitecaps as the big-billed birds plunge beneath the surface in search of northern anchovies, Pacific sardines and mackerel. It is what scientists call a "feeding frenzy." And it is an encouraging sign for a bird that has struggled in recent years with a warming ocean, inconsistent breeding patterns and toxic algae blooms in Southern California. The California brown pelican was once on the federal endangered species list. Though removed in 2009, the big birds still face a fight for survival.

A beloved albino alligator named Claude at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco has died at age 30. The museum announced his death on Tuesday. Claude was an unofficial mascot and appeared in children's books and ads. He captivated visitors with his "quiet charisma" during his 17 years at the museum. Claude was born in 1995 in Louisiana. He was born with albinism, which made him appear white and his eyes pinkish-red. He recently underwent treatment for a suspected infection. The museum plans a public memorial, and people can share memories via email or post.

Rescuers have saved a pet dog that fell off an oceanside bluff in San Francisco and spent more than 20 minutes clinging to a narrow ledge. Officials say the dog was playing with another pooch on Tuesday at Fort Funston, which is a coastal park with steep bluffs. Firefighters say the dog slipped on some vegetation, lost its traction and fell over the cliff. One rescuer rappelled down, attached a harness to the dog and held it as they were pulled back up top together. Rescuers then reunited the dog with its owner.

Losing a pet often is the first time children encounter death. Psychologists and pet bereavement specialists say the experience can be an opportunity for profound emotional learning and influence how young people process grief as adults. They say parents and guardians can help children accept the painful permanence of death and guide them through a healthy and healing mourning process. Children as young as 4 may struggle to grasp the concept of death, while older children may need more emotional support. A child’s closeness to a pet and whether the death was sudden also can shape individual responses. Experts advise parents to avoid euphemisms and to share their own feelings of grief.
