The 62-year-old Redwood City resident was crossing the street at the intersection of El Camino Real and 17th Avenue when a female driver turned north from Bovet Road onto South El Camino Real and hit Vasquez.
One source said the woman was a cleaning lady who took the bus to each job and had previously commented on the risky intersection.
The intersection has a marked crosswalk, pedestrian signals and signage reminding drivers to yield to pedestrians, though some have repeatedly stated that those measures are not enough. Making improvements to the intersection is difficult, since El Camino Real is under Caltrans, or state, jurisdiction, not the city’s.
According to AAA, only 35% of drivers are "good drivers", the rest is speeding, drunk, high, distracted, too young, too old, cognitively impaired, etc.
In any death, police should take in the driver and process them. They should find out if the driver was in the 35% of 65% category. There should be blood drawn, fingerprints taken, identities confirmed, medical examinations, interviews, cars investigated. This would require an official detainment and therefore the release of names.
Police is happy to do all that for any transient or shoplifter they can grab, but they protect even those 65% of scofflaws with all means and might.
Their first reaction is "how can we blame this on the victim". This has been researched heavily, but CA Democrats still don't want to change it - hint: 'donations'.
One important fact. The victim did not own a car. She is part of the 30% of Americans who are often forgotten when it comes to decisions on whether to prioritize street safety or driver speed and convenience.
Also, fixing the problem is not difficult, even though Caltrans is involved. Surely our state leaders can make a phone call or two and make things happen.
Exactly. When a few speeders almost wiped out on I-92 in HMB during a rainy weekend, Berman, Becker, and Mueller were immediately on the phone and calling for 'Safety for Speeders'.
And very quickly, Caltrans came out with an engineering solution that allowed speeders to continue to raise around the curve there.
Of course those same three stayed very quiet about safety for non-speeding, vulnerable road users along Hwy 1.

Why is the driver's identity not being released?
Because they have not been arrested and likely will face no consequences for killing Veronica Vasquez. The law protects drivers.
If a teen steals a $7 deodorant from Walgreens, however, their face is plastered across every social media channel.
