In a letter to the editor I pointed out how developers are planning to use Senate Bill 79 to build up to seven-story apartment buildings within a half mile of a major transit stop (trains and buses). And how they are planning to build these developments with only one parking space per unit when the average California household has 2.3 cars per household.
Well it’s happening, a developer is proposing a 83-unit rental residential property at 2555 Flores St. and allowing only one parking space per unit. This is in addition to the 181-unit development on North San Mateo Drive just approved by the Planning Commission with one parking space per unit.
The impact will be felt not only on single-family houses, but multiunits and small businesses in your neighborhood with a significant reduction in street parking availability and an increase in traffic due to spillover from these developments. Added to that is the reduction in your property values.
The debacle has already started. If you live within a half mile of a major transit stop, I would be very worried about what more is to come. Contact Josh Becker and Diane Papan, your state legislators, and the City Council before you get impacted by this.
The City of San Mateo has several parking garages, paid for by taxpayers, that are nowhere near filled. I'm sick of paying for parking garages that sit empty and I don't use.
In general, I agree with the letter, but I think one caution is advised: The legislators the author proposed be contacted are the people who either voted for or stood by as people working for us made these rules, as if there would never be a consequence. To the extent that these projects contain "affordable" housing - which most do because it is a financial winner via higher density, the subsidy of these projects in on the backs of the neighbors. Hard to know if sending Scott Weiner to Congress where he can't hurt anyone now is a good idea or not. The Dems might take over, in which case he and similar nuts will have a bigger voice than anyone should license. Time to gut these rules/laws and get local control back.
