A parcel tax for the Redwood City School District received 57.5% approval by voters, a ways away from the 66% required to pass, according to semiofficial results from the San Mateo County Elections Office as of Tuesday night.
The parcel tax, Measure C, received 4,262 total votes in favor and 3,150 votes against from residents living within the district’s bounds.
If passed, it would generate $12.2 million annually for the district by levying a 17.5 cent tax per building square foot for eight years. This would equate to a $175 tax for a 1,000-square-foot property, with exemptions for seniors.
The district had been studying the likelihood of a parcel tax passing for the past few years, but a poll conducted in 2024 showed an estimated 60% support from voters, falling short as well.
Revenue from the parcel tax can be used for a variety of school programs and is often used to pay teachers. Funds cannot be used for administrator salaries or pensions.
The school district proposed a draft distribution document that outlines how the revenue will be allocated across campuses. The amount is dependent on school enrollment and the enrollment of “unduplicated pupils,” which means students who may be English learners, foster youth or students eligible for free and reduced-meals.
The Redwood City School District also generates revenue from Measure U, a separate tax approved in 2016 that brings in $1.9 million annually until 2030.
Election results will be updated at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4; Friday, June 5; Monday, June 8; Wednesday, June 10; Friday, June 12; and Monday, June 15. The results will be certified Thursday, July 2.
