Editor,

As we watch Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump and other administration officials promoting a state religion, we should look around the world to see how state sponsored and enforced religion is working out. Americans should look at the strife that religion causes in countries like India, Pakistan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Myanmar, Northern Ireland and many others. And then we should ask ourselves “Is that what we want in America? The administration called its camp meeting “Rededication 250.” We should rededicate ourselves to the separation of church and state enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Here we go again… Thanks for your letter, Mr. Paine, but you’ve been misled about the concept of the separation of church and state. Mr. Hegseth, President Trump and other administration officials are not forcing you to follow their religion or any religion. You’re free to bow at the Church of Taylor Swift or the Church of Mickey Mouse, or any other church if you so choose. Feel free to rededicate yourself to whoever/whatever you see fit but don’t waste your time attempting to mislead the right people about the separation of church and state. We know better (even those who don’t admit it). BTW, there are several references to God in the Declaration of Independence but not the Constitution. Why is that? Because nobody is forcing you to a specific religion? Have a Trump-tastic long weekend!
