Acknowledging the justifiable concerns that our hard-won right to vote is under attack and that all votes legally cast must be counted, it’s even more important to recognize the outstanding service provided by our San Mateo County Elections Office.
On Election Day, June 2, San Mateo County Democrats received a call from a physician whose patient was living in a rehabilitation facility and was eager to vote in the primary. After gathering necessary voter information, I was able to verify the patient’s registration and called County Elections to see if/how they could help. I was asked to send an email requesting same day voting assistance complete with the voter’s name, facility address and contact information for his physician and social worker.
Several hours later I received an email from Ms. Gonzales, an election specialist from San Mateo County Elections and Registration Division, informing me that an employee had taken a ballot to the facility, waited for the ballot to be completed and returned it in time to be counted. The elderly voter was so happy and appreciative that he was able to vote.
Our San Mateo County Democrats Voter Registration team will continue spreading the word about the many voting options available while kindly reminding voters not to leave it to the last day to vote whenever possible. Thank you San Mateo County Elections for your commitment to service and for demonstrating your belief that voting is a sacred right and not a privilege available to only a select few.
Thanks for your letter, Ms. Vargas, but I’d be interested in knowing what voter information was gathered and whether they showed the voter was an American citizen. And I could be wrong, but isn’t what you are doing considered ballot harvesting? Regardless, we need voter ID laws implemented. BTW, the privilege of voting should only go to those who have gone through the process to be verified. If they don’t want to bother, then they definitely shouldn’t be voting.
