Héctor Camacho has won the race for San Mateo County superintendent of schools, beating out opponent Chelsea Bonini, according to semiofficial election results released Friday.
As of 4 p.m. June 12, Camacho had received 82,421 votes with 71,293 for Bonini. Although there are an estimated 9,000 votes left to tally, per the San Mateo County Elections Office, Camacho now has over 11,000 votes more than his opponent — beating out the margin of error and making him the race’s winner.
“I’m feeling really great about that, and super grateful to everyone that was a part of this,” Camacho said.
The Office of Education and its superintendent are responsible for providing the county’s districts particular fiscal oversight and ensuring legal compliance. It also oversees the county’s court and community schools, as well as special education programs.
Camacho is currently the executive director of Equity, Social Justice and Inclusion of the San Mateo County Office of Education. He views his win as a testament to the coalition-building nature of his campaign, he said.

“[We’re] building a coalition of folks — not just the education community, the entire community, that was rallying around kids, rallying around public schools,” he said.
His priorities in office will be advancing literacy across the entire education system and creating an interconnected system that helps students to the next step in their college and career pathways, he said. Previously, Camacho also said he hopes to expand the Office of Education’s support for districts and ensure the most in need receive the appropriate attention.
Bonini, who did not respond to request for comment, is a trustee on the San Mateo County Board of Education, which works with the superintendent and Office of Education. She’d said previously that one major reason she was running for superintendent was to mend a damaged dynamic between the Office of Education and Board of Education.
Camacho will take over for interim Superintendent of Schools Marco Chávez, who was appointed to the position in February to fill a vacancy left by the early retirement of the late Nancy Magee. He’s entering the role at a pivotal time for public schools, he said.
“I think we’re at a really important time for public education, not only in the country and in the state, but really in our county, when we think of some of the amazing work that’s happening, but also the challenges we’re up against in the future,” he said.
I wouldn’t consider the race over until the winner is “official.” Who knows, maybe there’s still 12,000 votes out there and Bonini may receive all of them. Leading to a Spencer Pratt-type loss for Camacho.
