The Foster City Police Department is addressing the unlawful operation of electric motorcycles and electric scooters within the city after seeing an increase in use, especially by juveniles.

E-motos are not legal for operation on public roads, sidewalks, parks, trails or other areas open to the public. These vehicles do not meet California requirements for street-legal operation and may only be used in areas where permitted by law. Any e-bike vehicle capable of traveling faster than 20 mph with motor power alone, and/or with a motor exceeding 750 watts, is not an e-bike under California law, according to Foster City police.
