Editor,

JD Vance’s various recent positive public statements concerning the progress of the ‘deal’ with Iran are disappointing. Apparently, he thinks we’re stupid enough to believe him. I emigrated from South Africa to the U.S. almost 48 years ago. In 1978, there was a lot going on in the world except we didn’t have almost instantaneous access to news reports yet because the Internet hadn’t been invented. One memory I brought with me to my adopted country from my upbringing in Africa was the idea that if someone says they’re going to kill you, believe them.

This LTE equates the MoU to end the war with Iran as appeasing Islamic terrorism. It also states Muslims have a hatred for the Western way of life. Third, it takes “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” literally. Shia faith is against the killing of women and children and other noncombatants in war. Iran supports the resistance to Israel’s violence against civilians in Israel’s current goals of expansion for territory and resources. The first item in the MoU makes Iran and the U.S. responsible to end the war on all fronts, which includes Lebanon and Gaza. The terrorists who carried out the 9/11 attacks were not from Iran and not backed by Iran. Second, let’s not use such a broad brush to characterize the followers of Islam by saying they hate the Western way of life. It’s dehumanizing and not true. Witness the WWE matches in the region. Third, “Death to America/Death to Israel” is a metaphor for ending colonialism and oppression. The Revolution of 1979 was the overthrow of the repressive regime of the Shah, whose SAVAK paramilitary police was modeled on the Gestapo. The Shah’s regime was installed by the West after MI6 and the CIA in 1953 orchestrated the coup that overthrew Mossadegh, the democratically elected leader, for the crime of nationalizing the oil fields so the profits would go to the people. Iran took control of its own affairs without the West controlling their oil profits through the Petrodollar, and for that they got decades of brutal sanctions and the current war. The Empire lost this battle. Let's not make it worse by continuing the violence in the region that violates the terms of the MoU. That's in our hands.
