Editor,
Papan and others keep on panicking of e-bikes. These are not the problem.
What are the problems?
• Cars kill 400,000 in the United States, e-bikes/e-motos 100. We need to focus our attention here.
• If folks just have to fixate on “e-bikes,” the problem is the manufacturers and stores that lie, calling an illegal 6000 watt and 60 mph e-moto an e-bike. They are not. We need to pass Senate Bill 1167, and hold the makers and sellers of illegal e-motorcycles to account.
• We do not need to wait for SB 1167. CA VEH 312.5(d) already makes selling an e-moto as an e-bike illegal: “The following vehicles are not electric bicycles under this code and shall not be advertised, sold, offered for sale, or labeled as electric bicycles.”
Want to do something to make kids on e-bikes safer?
• Write your city, county and state electeds and demand that we create Safe Routes to Schools with fully protected/separated Class 1 and Class 4 bike lanes. And that unsafe roads that encourage unsafe speeds and turns be redesigned.
• Write to your state legislators and support SB 1167 and oppose all of the other e-bike bills.
• Write to your county district attorney and California Attorney General Bonta and demand that they start enforcing CA VEH 312.5(d) and bring suit against makers and sellers of illegal e-motos sold as e-bikes.

Here we go again with the illogical comparison between cars and e-bikes/e-motos/bikes. Hey Mr. Carlini, how are you going to lug 10 bags of groceries or a case of bottled water on any type of bike? How long will it take millions to commute to their jobs, drop off kids, pick up kids, run errands, etc? Let’s top trying to waste money to discriminate against, say 400,000 cars, to benefit 100 e-bikes/e-motos/bikes which are mostly used for recreation. I wouldn’t mind seeing e-bikes/e-motos/bikes registration fees so they pay their fair share.
TBot old friend. We are all glad you are rich, who can afford 10 bags of groceries these days? With this kind of inflation due to the failed white house policies, with all the tax increases, and all these foreign oil wars going on. Heck, who can still afford driving?
Let's put this another way. USA has never spent one dollar or sacrificed even one American soldier to fight wars to allow for cheap bicycling. We are spending millions and sacrificed thousands for oil wars to sponsor cheap driving.
Yes, well said.
