The San Mateo City Council seems poised to reappoint current Planning Commission Chair Seema Patel, after the council’s first-choice appointment abruptly withdrew last week.
Over the last few weeks, the council has appointed several new members to the Community Relations, Senior Advisory, Sustainability and Infrastructure, Civic Arts and Parks and Recreation commissions.
A new Planning Commission appointment was also due, and the council voted to move forward on a new candidate, James Horsman, rather than Patel during a prior June meeting. Shortly after, Horsman abruptly resigned from the position, citing work schedule conflicts.
Councilmembers had previously decided to list Patel as the first alternative should a vacancy open. While it’s not required that the city appoint the first listed alternative, it has generally been the common practice, according to a city staff presentation at the council meeting June 15. A majority of the councilmembers decided to move forward with Patel’s reappointment to the commission at the time, except for Councilmembers Lisa Diaz Nash and Danielle Cwirko-Godycki. The council will make the official appointment in July.
Patel is running for City Council in District 3, currently represented by Robert Newsom, who is running for reelection.
The rest of the story is that ~20 people spoke about Seema Patel’s hostility and disrespect of citizens and her violations of the Code of Conduct. Council member Danielle Cwirko-Godycki gave comments from her heart about the need for commissioners to treat all citizens with respect. Yet Mayor Loraine, Nicole Fernandez, and Rob Newsom voted to reappoint Patel.
Let's see if the groups will apologize or commend Rob for the reappointment vote. Since Council said Seema would be the preference if an opening happened it is very hard to go in a different direction, and ultimately the right vote.
I agree with Thomas and have to give Rob Newsom full credit for standing by the alternate ranking decided and agreed just a few weeks ago, in the face of heavy lobbying and personal attacks against Seema. She is experienced and qualified and the right appointment with the amount of business heading to the PC in the coming months. Congrats to Seema she loves San Mateo and I know this means alot to her.

Congrats to Ms. Patel on her reappointment to the Planning Commission!

Rob Newsom has been proven do be an expensive disaster.
I mean, what kind of character would try to collude with Amo Lee to steal bike lanes from low-income neighborhoods in the city's "Equity Focus Areas".
Is he anti-equity? Is he anti-children? Is he anti-sustainability? Is he in the pockets of Big Oil and Big Car?
Or is he just playing "5D chess" or being "mega MAGA"?
We need independent thinkers, not people remote controlled by Corporate Interest.
