After years of anticipation, South City’s newest Safeway store is officially open, a significant milestone in a larger development project that will also include life science, retail and residential developments.
The 61,000-square-foot grocery store, located at 190 El Camino Real, held its grand opening on Wednesday.
The store will be part of Discovery Station, a 15-acre mixed-use project spearheaded by the developer SteelWave which will include about 184 residential units and a biotech campus.
The lot was vacant for roughly a decade before the Safeway groundbreaking began in 2022. Similar to many developments over the last couple years, it also faced financing challenges, pushing back the completion date. For years, the city has been adamant about ensuring any new development on the site includes a grocery store.
According to a recent press release, the store features a full-service pharmacy, underground parking, a deli department, full-service sushi bar and floral department. It will employ about 180 associates.
The grand opening also coincides with Safeway’s 100th anniversary of Northern California stores.
“Safeway is woven into the fabric of neighborhoods, bringing generations of families together around the table to share in the joy of food,” Kelly Mullin, president of Safeway’s Northern California Division, said in a press release. “We have evolved alongside the communities we serve while remaining grounded in our commitment to fresh, locally sourced produce, quality products, and the friendliest shopping experience. Reaching this 100-year milestone is a remarkable achievement attributable to the incredible loyalty of our customers.”
There are 262 stores in Northern California, according to the press release.
