Christina Corpus, the former sheriff of San Mateo County, is still putting up a fight after she was ousted in October 2025, with a government claim filed April 10 demanding the county pay for defamation and injury to her reputation.
In a press release, attorneys from the law firm Quadra & Coll LLP for Corpus announced the government claim that described the county’s effort to remove Corpus from office as a “sustained campaign of defamation.”
“Sheriff Corpus was not removed from her position as sheriff because of misconduct,” James Quadra, Corpus’ attorney, said in the release. “She was removed because of lies that were manufactured and repeated until they achieved their intended goal of nullifying the will of voters.”
The April 10 claim alleges that San Mateo County officials engaged in the campaign of defamation in response to Corpus’ “reform efforts” aimed at increasing accountability and transparency.
The county said it was aware of the recent claim filed by Corpus, stands by Corpus’ removal and will respond through the appropriate legal channels.

“This claim recycles allegations that have already been carefully considered and rejected or rebutted,” county spokesperson Effie Milionis Verducci said in a statement. “These matters were thoroughly reviewed through multiple independent and formal processes.”
On Oct. 14, Corpus was removed from office by an unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors for conflict of interest, retaliation against employees and ordering the wrongful arrest of a union leader. She was the first elected sheriff to be removed from office without a recall effort or civil grand jury process.
The vote came after a monthslong campaign asking for voters to allow the board the extended authority to remove an elected official for just cause, a 10-day under-oath evidentiary hearing and two independent investigations into Corpus’ tenure. Conclusions were consistently made that Corpus violated her duties as sheriff.
The actions of the Board of Supervisors were done so publicly, and each vote was upheld in both state and federal court, Milionis Verducci said.
The April 10 claim said the defamatory statements caused Corpus harm, coerced her into retirement, ruined her reputation of honesty and integrity, and totaled damages exceeding $35,000. It also lists 32 individuals who allegedly contributed to the defamation against Corpus.
If you're out there, Mr. Simon, it appears the “As the (former) Sheriff’s World Turns” soap opera is still ongoing. So if you’re looking for column ideas, perhaps you can pen another column letting us know what potential drawbacks Ms. Corpus will face in her lawsuit. For example, is Corpus now open to the discovery process, as well as having to testify? And if found to lie on the stand, is Corpus open to be prosecuted, criminally, for perjury? As well as being open to civil suits by those she may potentially impugn? Perhaps you could also write a column listing any settled or ongoing lawsuits, and how much taxpayer money has been or will be potentially shelled out. Wait, I recall there are lawsuits against individuals, too?

It would have been cheaper to not re-elect her. Many of us saw this coming. We should sue the attorneys who recommended the firing for malpractice.
