We local residents have been fortunate to be served by an independently owned daily newspaper focused on San Mateo County since 2000. You remain one of the few truly independent papers in the Bay Area — a rare bird in today’s media ecosystem.
That standing makes your editorial voice both influential and respected. For that reason, your endorsement of Supervisor Canepa for assessor, and the rationale behind it, surprised me and gave me pause. It is notable that this “true leader” does not appear to have the backing of his fellow supervisors for this role, and his career has included periods of public disagreement and friction.
While Mr. Canepa may be the stronger and more experienced campaigner, that alone does not outweigh Mr. Irizarry’s clear advantage in relevant experience. Mr. Irizarry already possesses the background directly aligned with the responsibilities of the office — experience that Supervisor Canepa does not. One could reasonably question whether the roles might even be reversed in practice.
Additionally, Supervisor Canepa’s emphasis on Mr. Irizarry’s past voter registration as an Independent seems overstated. For many years, thousands of voters in California and across the country made similar errors, often due to confusion around party labels. Election authorities themselves recognized this widespread misunderstanding and took steps to clarify and correct it.
