Editor,
The Daily Journal’s endorsement of David Canepa reads like a paid ad, quickly glossing over a well-documented pattern of grandstanding, hostility, impulsive behavior and poor judgment.
His record includes personal attacks on colleagues and members of the public, along with attention-seeking proposals. During the sheriff appointment process, he texted a reporter, “Get your pen ready. LOL,” while launching into a prosecutorial-style attack on Sheriff Binder. Even other supervisors have said he “crossed the line” and made them “uncomfortable” during meetings. He also threw a fit when receiving his committee assignments, which included some evening meetings, saying child care is expensive. This is a pattern, not an anomaly.
During COVID, he gleefully posted, “No shoes, no shirt, no vaccine, no service … you will be turned away from your favorite restaurants,” alongside hashtags like #VaccinePassport and #WearYourDamnMask directed at the public, including first responders. His proposals to ban menthol cigarettes (a policy many believe is racist), police cellphone use in crosswalks, and urge Congress to ban “killer robots” reflect a heavy-handed Soviet-style approach and raise serious questions about his judgment.
Voters are being asked to trust him with running an office that demands impartiality, restraint, the ability to work constructively with others, and public confidence. An endorsement should inform, not sanitize. The Daily Journal’s does the latter.

Grace, my points exactly. Thank you!
Great letter, Grace. Canepa's behavior during Covid showed him to be an empty suit with no real convictions. He's not stupid (like Kevin Mullin) but he latches on to what he believes is politically expedient. I watched the BOS meetings during Covid and was at first impressed with Canepa's questioning the unscientific lockdowns and expressing real concern for the small businesses that were hurt. Then at some point, he flipped, calling for Lockdown 2.0 in advance of Newsom shutting the state a second time in fall 2020, swearing at constituents to "Wear a D---Mask", pushing for vaccine passports etc. I guess he felt that "taking Covid the most seriously" was a great way to propel himself to higher office. Didn't work with his Congressional campaign and funny how he never talks about any of that now. Still wearing that D--- Mask David? Maybe while driving alone to be super safe?
*interestingly the DJ made me edit my comment for "use of profanity". So it is just fine for a Supervisor to use that word (and worse) and even have it in his social media profile, but I can't use it in the comment section?
Thanks for your letter, Ms. Xuereb, reminding us of David Canepa’s “accomplishments” Let’s all do our part to ensure Mr. Canepa is kicked off the government dole by voting for anyone but Canepa.
