Few foods feel more American than the hot dog, a mainstay at ballparks, street carts and Fourth of July barbecues.

But to simply call hot dogs “American” is to miss a whole lot of nuance, and potentially offend local connoisseurs across the country. How to prepare and eat a hot dog is a matter of regional pride.

I’ve eaten many combinations of hot dogs but some of these are new to me. Maybe this weekend, I’ll set up a hot dog toppings buffet spread with all the fixin’s so folks can prep these different hot dog combinations and enjoy their hot dogs, their way. Like Burger King. Hot Dog King? Or…I can let others do the work while I “supervise.” Meanwhile, in prep, I’ll hit Costco for a super-sized pack of Tums and a $1.50 hot dog combo.

Enjoy your hot dogs and enjoy your July barbecues. If you’re planning on fireworks, be safe and keep a hose and fire extinguisher readily available, identify which folks have experience in providing first aid, and keep an emergency stash of ice, in case, you know. Firecrackers can be dangerous, especially to fingers.
