This weekend’s letter to the editor from Maggie Freydoz is a breath of fresh air and rational articulation of a key problem in modern America — the richness of embarrassment that inevitably results from people rehashing what they have heard (or been told) without even the slightest effort to validate the information.
Trusting people because they tell you they are trustworthy without any demonstration of reliability, accepting information from those who assert they are smart without a shred of evidence that they are even half-witted, embracing actions and projects purported to be in the public interest — without any tested report of the costs and benefits — these are not milestones on the road to Camelot, they are steps in the descent into perdition.
Perhaps, instead of rationalizing an as yet unsuccessful war that has produced little more than enrichment for the few and burden for the many — launched by the candidate who swore himself intractably opposed to regime change and adamantly committed to not enter into war, while purporting (without any evidence or substantiation) to have ended many — some of your contributors could follow Maggie’s excellent example and articulate opinions rooted in truth and bolstered by agreed facts.
