Councilmember Rob Newsom Jr., a former mayor and current representative for City Council District 3 since 2022, announced he is running for reelection in November 2026.
Raised in San Mateo, Newsom attended local schools including St. Matthew’s Catholic School, Borel Middle School and St. Ignatius College Preparatory. An Eagle Scout with San Mateo’s Troop 42, he has lived in the Sunnybrae neighborhood for almost 28 years.
Prior to his election, he served on San Mateo’s Personnel Board and as Vice President of the Sunnybrae Neighborhood Association. He is running against Seema Patel, a San Mateo planning commissioner, who officially announced her candidacy for the San Mateo City Council in January.
Also running for District 5 is Dana Sahae Yates. Mayor Adam Loraine currently represents the district and is expected to announce his reelection bid soon.
The seat for District 1, currently represented by Lisa Diaz Nash, is also up for reelection.
