Seema Patel, a San Mateo planning commissioner, officially announced her candidacy for the San Mateo City Council, District 3.
She is a 12-year resident of the Central neighborhood, serving on the Planning Commission and founding the advocacy group Safe Streets for Everyone. Patel was appointed to the Planning Commission in 2021 and co-founded the B Street Boosters, a grassroots group that raised funds for outdoor furniture to activate the mall and rallied residents to save it.
The District 3 seat is currently held by Rob Newsom.
Seema Patel is exactly the kind of candidate San Mateo needs. I’ve seen firsthand how much dedication, insight, and empathy she brings to civic issues. She digs into the details, builds coalitions, and gets things done. I’m excited to support her campaign! Check out her website: seemaforsanmateo.com
Seema is a deep and strategic thinker who is mindful of the future needs of San Mateo residents - we are lucky to have such a public servant in our community.
Interesting how advocacy in one area housing (getting rid of community benefits) harm another area of advocacy bike lanes (a community benefit)..in the early plans for Hillsdale mall a bike bridge was shown going across El Camino, now that this is not requires it has been deemed not feasible.
That is correct. San Mateo Democrats have a tendency to propose "green", "sustainable", "healthy", "equity", "pride", "safety infrastructure" to satisfy Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs). Without those in plans the EIR could not be approved. But as soon as the EIR and the project have been approved the infrastructure disappears again. Recent examples:
- Hillsdale Blvd. bike/ped bridge
- San Mateo TOD - new neighborhood has few bike lanes
- Redwood City Sequoia Station TOD - after EIR approval, bike lanes were replaced with "Bike Boulevards".
- three San Mateo grade separation projects - none had bike lanes
- 101 Express Lanes and Holly Street bike bridge
- Caltrain Electrification and Caltrain pedestrian bridge in Equity Focus Area North Fair Oaks
- 101 Express Lanes and Humboldt Bike Lanes - San Mateo is currently scheming to replace real bike lanes with "Bike Boulevards"
- Menlo Park bike/ped bridge on Middle Ave
- Bike lanes on ECR - right now happening to approve the Tanforan development. Those bike lanes won't be happening.
... the list is endless. Mind you the money for the car-centric side of these projects is always available.
But those are your typical "pro-green", "pro-equity", "pro-safety" San Mateo Democrats doing this.

Ms. Patel has an impressive background and would add a lot of energy and planning experience to the Council.
