I’ve made the San Francisco Bay Area my home for half of my life now. For three-quarters of that, I’ve chosen San Mateo. That’s 18 years of my life firmly rooted in The Villages. I was a PTA board member for years while my daughter was at George Hall and became a bit of a neighborhood celebrity and landmark during the COVID-19 years as “That front-porch office guy.” I’m a Midwestern immigrant, and we Midwesterners (like Southerners) hail from a front yard culture.
A friend of mine from Virginia — the South! Front yard culture! — has also chosen to plant roots and raise her children here in San Mateo’s District 3. Our friendship, however, long predates either of us choosing here as home. I originally met her through the master’s program in Pennsylvania we both graduated from. When I first started my consulting business, her robotics company was one of my first clients. She attributes her choice to become civically involved to my own civic involvement at SMFCSD Board meetings — although whatever civic involvement I had has been far surpassed by her civic leadership. In the end, where you trace your personal history from is far surpassed in importance by with whom you have the good fortune to trace it.
History, however, is about yesterday. I, for one, choose tomorrow. My old friend Seema Patel does too. Therefore, in considering who to support as the next San Mateo city councilmember for District 3, I choose Seema.
