Robert Nice’s letter “Support for Ukraine” in the Feb. 12 Daily Journal reminds us that there’s still a war in Ukraine. Nice correctly observes that the United States has been preoccupied with other places like Venezuela and Iran and has not continued a push for the end of the war in Ukraine.
This mistake in U.S. foreign policy prolongs the war. The administration should have kept pressure up for both sides to make a peace instead of abandoning the region. Russia is ready to end hostilities but, seeing as there is no pressure on Ukraine to make peace, it has assumed that the war will continue indefinitely. Russia has resumed the slow advancement into Ukraine.
Zelenskyy caved to European pressure not to give up the Donbas region. That is what halted a peace plan that almost was signed. Now Europe will learn the hard way that the Donbas region is already Russia’s territory and, hopefully, Zelenskyy has learned that the interference of Europe’s diplomats is unhealthy for Ukraine, and that thousands of Ukrainians will die because Europe demands dignity. Europe will not lose a single life in the prolonged war, Ukraine will see women and children die.
It may be months before pressure is brought to bear on Russia and Ukraine to sign a peace agreement. The terms will be eerily similar to the last one. Russia consolidates its land gains in Ukraine in exchange for peace and a chance to end the war.

So, why isn’t anything happening, despite all the praying being done? Perhaps he/she/it isn’t listening? Or, perhaps not even existing, except in some people’s fantasy?
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Constantino, but at this point, and what many of us know is inevitable should Ukraine continue to fight, Russia will win the war. Sad, but it was bound to happen when Biden took two knees and gifted Afghanistan to the Taliban.
