The Redwood City resident was crossing the street at the intersection of El Camino Real and 17th Avenue when a female driver turned north from Bovet Road onto South El Camino Real and hit Vasquez.
Vasquez cleaned homes for a living, but she never owned a car and always took the bus and walked everywhere, her granddaughter Samantha Vasquez said, including to take care of her 96-year-old mother.
“She had her same routine for 40 years,” Samantha Vasquez said. “She liked to take the bus and go walking. All my aunts and uncles would offer to help her get her license, but she liked to walk. She was always super independent.”
Vasquez said her grandmother had talked about the dangerous intersection on more than one occasion and was always cautious, frequently reminding her children and grandchildren to be careful when passing intersections.
“She would always tell my siblings to be careful and would always say [that intersection] was super dangerous,” she said.

Veronica had six children, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
“She was so full of life and loved to dance. She would always dance with me,” Samantha Vasquez said. “This has left such a burden on our family. She was the centerpiece of a huge family.”
The collision has placed even more pressure on city and state officials to advocate for a more protected crosswalk at the intersection, which currently has a marked crosswalk, pedestrian signals and signs reminding drivers to yield to pedestrians. Making improvements to the intersection is difficult, since El Camino Real is under Caltrans, or state, jurisdiction, not the city’s.
Rest in peace, Veronica. I am sorry that we have failed you in creating a society where it is safe to walk across the street.
Note that Caltrans and the City of SM are starting to point figures at each other over who is responsible for the design of this dangerous intersection. A protected left turn signal would go a long way to making it safer for pedestrians and preventing future fatalities. Hopefully, it doesn't take years for this to happen.
in this context we should point out that Caltrans is actually trying to bring safety to El Camino Real in San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City, etc.
But behind the scenes these San Mateo Democrats are scheming and lobbying Caltrans to not turn ECR into a "complete street" in their community.
I just sent a note to the San Mateo City Council and City Leaders with the suggestion to add designated left turn arrows to both Bovet and 17th. There are already designated left turn lanes on both roads so could be easily done. Adding left turn arrows to both roads would prevent cars that are turning left from interacting with pedestrians and cars going straight. Unless someone runs a red light, this would solve the problem pretty easily.
I sent a note to Caltrans too and received a nice reply, but they only control El Camino. Bovet and 17th are the responsibility of the City of San Mateo and within their power to correct.
