Last year, in a region known for its dog-friendliness, one of the most populous cities in San Mateo County became acutely aware that it was one of the few places in the area that didn’t host a dog-centered event.
“We have a very active dog community, and it’s a very popular thing in cities to have some kind of dog event, so we thought we should join in on the festivities,” Parks and Recreation Director Joanne Magrini said.
Last summer’s first annual Central Bark event was a success, prompting staff to continue expanding on the festivities. The fundraising event takes place in the city’s Central Park, with proceeds going to the nonprofit PAL, and features food trucks, Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company, vendor and photo booths, kid-friendly activities — and of course, lots of dogs.
Magrini said the previous event ran for about three hours and hosted about 350 people, and they may have a stronger turnout this year. In addition to residents bringing their own dogs, the nonprofit Coopers Dream will bring puppies available for adoption.
Residents can bring their dogs to relax and play with others, or they can also sign them up for the dog contests, considered a highlight of the event. Contestants can enter their dogs for the best bark, best trick or best owner lookalike, Magrini said. The San Mateo Police Department will also conduct canine demonstrations and bring Rookie the therapy dog as well. The agency’s first ever therapy canine has made a huge impact on the city, Mayor Rob Newsom said. Rookie recently visited the critically injured children of a recent car crash in San Mateo that killed their mother, and he often goes to court appointments with kids and sexual assault victims.
“He’s someone they can hug, and kids get a lot of great emotional support,” Newsom said. “And he helps bridge the relationship between youth and the police.”
Newsom, who is bringing his dog Minnie, said the dog-focused city has been craving an event like this.
“Dogs bring people together from all walks of life,” he said.
Central Bark will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field in Central Park on Sunday, Aug. 17. Dogs are permitted off leash only in designated areas.
