Four Chaplains

On Jan. 31, American Legion Post 105 Family honored the Four Chaplains — remembering their selfless duty and bravery in the face of certain death with the sinking of the USAT Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943, after being torpedoed by a German submarine. Once all life vests were distributed, the four chaplains removed their own vests and handed them to frightened young sailors. As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains — arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers. Of the 904 aboard, only 230 survived. Reading the tribute of each chaplain were the Rev. Katie Goetz for the Rev. George Fox (Methodist), Legionnaire Allan Hirsch for Rabbi Alexander Goode (Judaism), Chaplain Joe Serrano for the Rev. Clark Polling (Dutch Reformed), and Father Michael Quinn for Father John Washington (Roman Catholic).
