Veterinarian technicians spay and neuter both owned and homeless cats at the Nine Lives Foundation clinic in Redwood City in an effort to reduce the homeless cat population and unwanted litters.
In keeping pace with an increase in need, the Nine Lives Foundation is opening a new adoption and veterinary campus catering to the cats of the Peninsula, moving to a new location in Redwood City.
Opening April 4, the facility expansion will “significantly increase access to lifesaving veterinary care, adoption services, and community programs,” according to a press release.
It currently operates its clinic out of 3137 Jefferson Ave. in Redwood City and opens for adoptions at 3106 Rolison Road. The new center at 749 Brewster Ave. will be a central hub for both to increase access and convenience.
As a core service officer, Nine Lives Foundation performed 6,327 spay-and-neuter surgeries in 2024, which was a 54% increase from the year prior, according to the release.
Spaying and neutering cats is the most critical way to avoid unwanted litters and abundance of strays, Executive Director Liam Montgomery said previously.
The organization also continues to grow its Trap-Neuter-Return program, which is a humane process of trapping feral cats, spaying or neutering them, giving them vaccinations, mark them for tracking and then returning them to their outdoor home.

The Nine Lives Foundation is the leading organization operating a Trap-Neuter-Return program.
San Mateo County residents can apply for vouchers that cover 100% of the costs to spay or neuter feral cats, or $150 to offset the costs for privately owned pets. The goal is to prevent unwanted litters as much as possible and lower the costs to do so, Montgomery said.
Adoptions also continue to increase, and as a no-kill shelter Nine Lives increased its feline intake by 43% to meet growing needs.
The growth in services — and expiring leases — prompted Nine Lives Foundation to seek a more stable, permanent home for its core offerings.
By 2028, the organization expects to perform more than 10,000 surgeries each year, rescue and rehome more than 2,000 cats annually and increase its educational public programming, according to the release.
A grand opening celebration of the new space will be held at 749 Brewster Ave. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 4.
