Editor,

San Mateo has replaced the attractive wooden planters closing B street to traffic at Third and First avenues with menacing contraptions that look better suited for a war zone than a public promenade.

The wooden boxes that were placed as temporary barriers for the B Street Promenade/Mall were on wheels and so not at all protective of the pedestrians on the mall.

The current improvements, permanently placed due to the Council approving the Mall becoming permanently an open pedestrian space, are designed for emergency vehicle and service vehicle access, I suspect.

I will agree, and I was also concerned about the possible tripping hazard when I looked closely at the new flexible barriers' anchoring above the existing pavement's surface. Doug in North Central
