Bob Wackerman salutes Tim Donnelly’s letter regarding the barriers blocking off the far end of B Street near Peet’s. Unfortunately for their credibility and in their desire to voice their opinion and outrage, they’ve misremembered a few things from this most recent past.
The end of B Street with the, as they call it, “anti-tank” barriers, before it had planter boxes, had the white plastic fill up with water barriers that were never filled with water. A better car deterrent than planters on wheels, but still not great. For their pleasure and enjoyment, planter boxes can still be found marking the intersection near New Thai Elephant (as of March 23). Sure, the new ones look a bit aggressive — but given the preponderance of people worldwide trying to cause harm and damage by driving motor vehicles into pedestrian thoroughfares, probably a warranted safety measure that should make people feel that it IS a safer “walk friendly street.” They are a firm deterrent while also having the ability to be removed (i.e. not permanent).
Having read Tim and Bob regularly, I know that if the worst were to happen and a person were to cause mayhem intentionally plowing down B Street with the prior white plastic barriers or planter boxes, they would be writing vociferously about how the city should have had stronger and more protective barriers to protect the citizens. For some people, there is never a solution they can’t find a problem with.
