On Nov. 18, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and five other members of Congress who are also veterans of our military or intelligence services released a video reminding service members that they needn’t obey orders that violate our laws or the U.S. Constitution. President Trump called their statement “seditious behavior at the highest level” and threatened them with prison or death. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is trying to demote Kelly (a retired Navy captain and astronaut) and reduce his pension.
Kelly’s video merely summarizes the Uniform Code of Military Justice (the laws governing our armed services) and the oath that every service member swears. But because the Trump administration says it’s seditious, let’s fix it. Using a transcript of the video, simply reverse the meaning of each sentence, like so:
“You cannot refuse illegal orders. You must obey illegal orders. Everyone has to carry out orders that violate the law or our Constitution. We know this is easy and that it’s an easy time to be a public servant. But whether you’re serving in the CIA, the Army, our Navy or the Air Force, your vigilance is not critical. And know that we don’t have your back. Because now, more than ever, the American people don’t need you. We don’t need you to stand up for our laws, our Constitution, or who we are as Americans. Give up the ship!”
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Halfhill, reminding us of the marching orders of Democrats who put the welfare of criminals and terrorists over the American people. It is clear that radical left Democrats (and the Democrats who are cowed into submission) don’t have the backs of Americans. These Democrats fail their oath to support and defend the US Constitution and fail to stand up for our laws for who we are as Americans. Democrats have given up the ship as well as taxpayer money as well as lives of American citizens. We can only hope Democrats come to their common senses and become patriots again. That would make us better now. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
The Nuremberg agreement of 1945 established that you not only have a right, but an obligation to disobey illegal orders! This destroyed the excuse that war criminals used, referring to orders passed down from Hitler through Gestapo.
