Contrary to what letter writer Ed Kahl believes (China and Russian aggression in South America Jan. 15 edition), America had over 200 years to develop friendships and prosperity from Mexico to the tip of South America, but we chose to exploit.
Along comes China, seizes the opportunity for itself and other countries to prosper by making deals with the government and they build highways, ports, railroads and improve the infrastructure right down to soccer stadiums.
So, what does America do? Donald Trump on his orders murdered 100 fishermen in the Caribbean accusing them with no proof of being drug runners. Then he invades Venezuela killing another 100 soldiers on guard to protect their president who we kidnapped with his wife.
So, this is what happens to Central and South America when the United States comes calling:

1954, we overthrew the democratically-elected government in Guatemala; we supported the coup in Brazil in 1964; we overthrew the democratically-elected government in Chili in 1973; we helped overthrow the government in Argentina in 1976; Reagan brought in tons of cocaine to the U.S. to support the terrorist group called the Contras against the people of Nicaragua; In 1989, the U.S. took out Panama strongman Manuel Noreiga when he became useless to the U.S.; In 2009, the U.S. helped overthrow Manuel Zelaya in Honduras. And, I won’t get into what we’ve done in Mexico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Cuba.
So, the question is: What country would you want do business with?
Thank you for your attention to this matter, Mr. Scafani. To respond to your question, the USA is what country I’d want to do business with, as does just about all countries around the world. The USA is the world’s biggest market for them. As for your diatribe on past history…to borrow from Hillary Clinton, “What difference at this point does it make?” We’re not in 1954 or 1964 or 1973 or 1976 or 1989 or 2009. I won’t get into the years of Mexico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Cuba. The bigger question is, “Are you tired of winning under our (yes, our) great President Trump’s Golden Age of America?” Because I’m not, as well as the vast majority of Americans and others around the world. Bigly. Have a Trump-tastic day!

Brilliant synopsis of our distorted Monroe Doctrine taken to self destructive ends. China has the FAR more intelligent approach. We need to learn.
The communists are coming out of the closet.
