David Canepa, candidate for assessor-county clerk-recorder and chief elections officer, addresses supporters during the primary election watch party held at Sapore Italiano in Burlingame on Tuesday.
Supervisor David Canepa claimed victory as the next chief elections officer and assessor-county clerk-recorder, with a 6,975-vote lead over opponent Jim Irizarry, according to semiofficial election results Thursday.
And another close race has seen a turn of events. After trailing by a slim margin election night, Héctor Camacho pulled ahead of his opponent Chelsea Bonini in the race to be the next San Mateo County superintendent of schools.
As of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Camacho had 37,233 votes, bringing him to a lead with 50.57% of the vote over Bonini. The difference between the two remains slim, however, with only 838 votes between the two. This is slightly wider than the 500 or so votes that had Bonini in the lead on Tuesday.
In the race to be the next assessor, Canepa has 41,279 votes, leading with 54.61% of the vote, while Irizarry has earned 34,304 votes, as of Thursday. On election night, Canepa’s lead was by 4,897 votes.
Reflecting on the campaign, Canepa said it was filled with a “lot of emotions.”
“I was on the city council, I’ve been on the Board of Supervisors. This position, out of all of them, is the most meaningful to me,” Canepa said. “The ability to improve things and trying to build a culture that everyone can be proud of was really a driver for me in all of this.”
Irizarry has yet to concede the race, and said previously he’s looking to wait until every vote is counted out of respect for voters.

The numbers already show enough of a result for Canepa. It would be impossible for Irizarry to overcome a 9-point deficit, Canepa said.
Canepa said he will be committed to ensuring every eligible voter can vote by mail or in person and to “protecting our elections from federal interference.”
He also said he will focus on producing fair and accurate property assessment, digitizing records and ensuring protections for eligible seniors, veterans, disabled persons and nonprofits.
“Our message of protecting elections and making sure that we continue to be safe and secure — I think that is really what won the day for us,” Canepa said. “I’m excited. I’m really looking forward to serving.”
In another campaign, Measure C, to establish a parcel tax for the Redwood City School District has also seen a slight increase in voter approval, but still trails the needed 66% approval to pass.
As of Thursday, 59.16% of voters, or 6,027 votes, voted to approve the parcel tax that is proposed to generate $12.2 million for the school district.
The voter turnout in the county as of election night was 18%, and has risen to 20% as of Thursday.
Further results will be posted at 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, Monday, June 8; Wednesday, June 10; Friday, June 12; and Monday, June 15. The election is to be certified Thursday, July 2.
