South San Francisco’s popular hillside signage received a patriotic update to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary.
On Tuesday, about 75 volunteers gathered on Sign Hill to update the white letters — which say “South San Francisco The Industrial City” — and paint them red, white and blue.
The sign is an homage to the city’s rich industrial history, a prominent display visible to drivers heading north on Highway 101. The effort was sponsored by Genentech, a life science firm founded and based in the city.
The sign is painted red up top, blue in the middle and white at the bottom.
“The reason behind the order of the colors was to help address the confusion people already have with South San Francisco being its own city,” said city spokesperson Angenette Lau via email. “If we followed the red, white and blue order, ‘San Francisco’ would be white and would stick … so we switched the order around so that at least our nickname was brightest.”
