College of San Mateo played the second half of Saturday’s California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) state football championship game without sophomore defensive tackle Malakai Ross-Graves, the defensive line’s second leading tackler, after he suffered a knee injury in the second quarter.
Malakai Ross-Graves
“Malakai, he’s the heart and soul of our front,” CSM head coach Tim Tulloch said. “And losing him was a big impact.”
One of two CSM defensive linemen named to the All-Bay 6 Conference team, Ross-Graves was on the sideline for the remainder of the Bulldogs’ 28-27 win over Golden West-Huntington Beach at Lebard Stadium, but was on crutches throughout the second half and the postgame celebration.
“I hope the best for him,” Tulloch said. “I hope the prognosis comes back good. We’ll see what the doctors tell us. He’s such an important leader to us, and he’s a guy that led by example, and he’s a big reason why we’re here.”
Ross-Graves finished with one tackle and a half sack, as he and defensive end Charleston Waugh got to quarterback Kauna’oa Kamakawiwo’ole in the first quarter on Golden West’s second possession of the game. The Rustlers ultimately punted, setting up CSM’s first scoring drive of the day.
CSM finished with two sacks, including a previous stop when freshman edge rusher Beaux Sauve got to Kamakawiwo’ole on third down of Golden West’s first possession to force a punt. Following the injury to Ross-Graves, the Bulldogs did not record another sack.
