Jim Irizarry, San Mateo County assistant assessor-county clerk-recorder and assistant chief elections officer, announced his candidacy for the office’s top job after his boss, Mark Church, opted against running again for the position.
He has pledged to uphold the long-standing nonpartisan tradition of the office.
“This office has operated as non-partisan for more than 50 years,” Irizarry said in a press release. “My focus is on integrity, independence, and serving every resident fairly and impartially.”
Irizarry has 30 years of experience, including prior service as a San Mateo County social worker and as a Human Resources director in Redwood City. He worked closely with Church for over a decade, and has played an instrumental role in six major statewide election cycles, including three presidential and three gubernatorial elections. Irizarry is a graduate of San José State University with a bachelor’s degree in economics and is a California State Board of Equalization certified property tax appraiser.
Raised in San Mateo County after moving from Puerto Rico as a child, Irizarry comes from a union family and began his own career as an AFSCME member. If elected, he would become the first Latino to serve in this role in San Mateo County history.
Irizarry will be running against San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa, who announced last month he will be seeking Church’s seat. Church announced Jan. 15 he will not be seeking another term.
Canepa is a fourth-generation San Mateo County resident and on the Board of Supervisors. He has been a supervisor since 2017 and was previously the mayor of Daly City. He lives in Daly City with his wife and young son.
At the end of this term, Church will have served 16 years in the position.
