The Hillsborough Police Department is investigating report from a resident, filed at the end of May, that they had been scammed out of $2.7 million, Lt. Robert Kalkbrenner said.
The resident reportedly received a phone call from an individual posing as an AT&T representative that their account had been flagged for fraudulent activity linked to an international criminal organization, Kalkbrenner said.
The resident was then forwarded to an individual posing as an Interpol investigator, who Kalkbrenner said tricked the resident into wiring $2.7 million to an international bank account.
The resident allegedly learned they were the victim of a fraud scam after they were unable to speak with the fake law enforcement again, Kalkbrenner said.
He was unable to comment on what law enforcement agencies are looking into the alleged scheme, but said the matter was being investigated.
It’s imperative to be wary of potential financial scams, Kalkbrenner said, and encouraged residents to contact law enforcement if they were unsure.
“Contract your local law enforcement to help determine if this is legit or this is a scam,” he said.
