In 2024, the Sheriff’s Office saw a decline in reported violent crimes by 14% and property crimes by 15% compared to the year prior across the communities it serves, according to statistics published in a press release.

Statistics reflect reported crimes only in the unincorporated areas of the county, contracted communities of Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, San Carlos, Portola Valley and Woodside. Reported crimes within the county but outside of the Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction will differ in numbers.

On the surface this sounds like good news but it would be nice if numbers were associated with percentages. As it is now, we have no idea whether these percentages are statistically significant. For instance, did we have 1000 violent crimes and it decreased 14% to 860 violent crimes. An improvement, but not really. And have folks not bothered to report violent crimes or any crimes because they don’t feel law enforcement/district attorneys would do anything?

Not So Common

Terrence, you're spot on. Rapes decreased by 50%, there were two rapes the year before.
