Freeski star Gu improves after fall to put her in strong position in slopestyle qualifying
China freeski star Eileen Gu overcame a poor start by laying down a strong second run to put her in strong position in qualifying for women’s slopestyle final at the Winter Olympics on Saturday
LIVIGNO, Italy (AP) — China freeski star Eileen Gu overcame a poor start by laying down a strong second run to put her in good position in qualifying for women's slopestyle final at the Winter Olympics on Saturday.
The pressure was on the reigning silver medalist after she fell coming off the first rail of the opening run. But Gu responded by scoring big on the second go to put her in a provisional second place.
The top 12 skiers will advance to Monday's final.
Gu was only denied a treble of gold medals at Beijing 2022 when she was second in slopestyle while winning the halfpipe and big air events.
Gu, 22, is American-born but competes for China.
Slopestyle is course of rails and jumps that skiers navigate while performing acrobatic jumps that judges score for execution and difficulty.
