Recent events recall tactics used by authoritarian regimes worldwide. Over a million Palestinians endure winter in tents amid freezing rain in Gaza. Over 20 have died from hypothermia, while hundreds of thousands of mobile homes and temporary shelters are lined up just outside the border, ready for deployment within hours by UNRWA and aid agencies. However, the Israeli government has blocked their entry for several months, violating countless agreements.
Over 969 ceasefire violations were committed by Israeli forces between Oct. 10 and Dec. 28, resulting in at least 414 Palestinian deaths and over a thousand injuries. These violations included 455 bombardments of residential areas, 298 incidents of direct gunfire at civilians, 54 military incursions into populated areas, 162 demolitions of homes and civilian facilities, and 45 cases of abduction or detention.
The genocide and apartheid continue throughout Palestine. In Jenin, Israeli soldiers patrol freely through hospital corridors and patient rooms. Amnesty International reported in 2016 on U.S. law enforcement being trained in crowd control and surveillance by Israeli forces, despite their record of human rights violations. The world watched as Israel ignored ICJ orders to allow food aid into Gaza and attacked international activists aboard civilian flotillas attempting to bring humanitarian supplies. Pro-Palestine activists are imprisoned and accused of baselessly inflated crimes.
San Mateo, home to a peace-loving diverse population, has a choice. Will we stand aside while warmongers continue their crimes, or stand with the oppressed, working together for true peace?
Here we go again with Ms. Feng conveniently forgetting that Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel and now Ms. Feng is attempting to fault Israel for retaliating against an enemy who would like to exterminate them. The bottom line is that Hamas and their supporters made their bed and they must now lie in it. If Hamas continues to violate ceasefire conditions, they deserve a response from Israel. But don’t worry. Many of us will not stand aside while Hamas warmongers continue their crimes. We’ll stand with the oppressed Israelis, working together for true peace. And as for your headline, the answer is yes. Peace can be achieved, either through working together or removing opposition from the “other” side.
