A fire at a two-story affordable housing development in Redwood City on Friday displaced 37 adults and 19 children along with numerous pets, the Redwood City Fire Department said in a press statement.
At 2:23 p.m., firefighters responded to a “well-involved fire” in the two-story apartment building located at 3762 Rolison Road, according to a report by Battalion Chief Geoffrey Balton. The fire spanned both floors and was contained by 3 p.m.
All residents were out of the building by the time firefighters arrived on scene. One individual was assessed and released by paramedics on scene and no other injuries were reported, Balton said.
A temporary relocation center was opened at the Fair Oaks Community Center for the displaced families to go and the American Red Cross was on scene to assist with housing needs.
The building that caught fire is a 55-unit affordable housing complex, known as Mosaic Garden, in the Friendly Acres neighborhood of Redwood City. MidPen Housing performed a major rehabilitation of the 1960s-built complex in 2019.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and it was not disclosed how long it would be before the building is habitable.
