The effort to revamp Middlefield Road, a central corridor through North Fair Oaks, has reached a turning point in progress as the construction phase nears completion, but next steps are in the hands of PG&E.
Tasks such as trench excavation, sanitary sewer replacements, road reconstructions, sidewalk widening and the installation of streetscape infrastructure are done, said Krzystof Lisaj, deputy director of Engineering and Resource Protection for the Department of Public Works.
The next phase involves utility undergrounding, which will relocate overhead electric and communication wires to an underground trench, an undertaking led by the utility. Pacific Gas and Electric has not communicated a start date for this process, Lisaj said, but Public Works estimates it will take about 18-24 months to complete.
Though streetlights are already installed throughout the project’s designated area, these will not function until the undergrounding work is complete. This progress will also precede the relocation of the Health Clinic driveway, subsequent sidewalk concrete restoration, and the implementation of trees along Middlefield Road.
Community feedback in recent meetings raised concerns of vehicle speeds between Second and Pacific avenues. Though some requested stop signs, Lisaj said they are not effective speed controls, and can actually increase traffic congestion with little to no gain in safety. However, he said Public Works will revisit the topic once the project is done.
“Once everything is installed, it takes about six months for traffic patterns to normalize and at that point we can reevaluate if stop signs are warranted,” he said.
