Recent cases of school violence prompted the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to approve mandatory tours of Los Angeles County Coroner's facilities for students caught making threats or bringing guns to school.
The board's action expands a program that applies to minors convicted of drunken driving. The move calls for the coroner's office, probation department and county Office of Education to work with the county's juvenile court to develop a touring program that "targets potential youthful offenders," said Supervisor Mike Antonovich.
In a related development, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District in Orange County was considering a zero-tolerance policy Tuesday night that would create harsh penalties for campus bullies.
The measure was sought in the wake of last week's shooting at Santana High School in San Diego County that left two students dead and 13 injured. A 15-year-old freshman at the school, who was reportedly picked on by classmates, has been charged with murder and other crimes.
The tour resolution was originally passed unanimously, but Supervisor Gloria Molina later withdrew her support.
The program will not necessarily include the county morgue, but may include tours of a facility reserved for the storage of indigents' bodies.<
