Southern California-based Dog Haus, which brands itself as “craft casual,” is prepping to serve up gourmet wieners, sausages and burgers in Belmont.
An early March opening is planned for the chain’s first Peninsula location at 1000 El Camino Real, which was previously occupied by a Five Guys burger joint. Dog Haus opened its first Bay Area spot in Fremont in 2016.
Dog Haus offers 16 varieties of gourmet wieners and sausages.
The Belmont Dog Haus is owned by franchisees Robert and Vahe Issai, a father and son team. Vahe Issai, who worked in health care, was a regular at a Dog Haus in Los Angeles before he decided to enter the restaurant business. Prior to joining the company, he handled marketing and public relations for an Los Angeles-based restaurant group, and Robert Issai, who also worked in health care, owned two pizza joints in Los Angeles.
“From kitchen staff to ownership, the culture at Dog Haus is very family-oriented, which made it easy for us to make the big jump joining them,” Vahe Issai said. “The company cares about quality growth rather than just chasing numbers and that caught our eye.”
The company specializes in creative and customizable dogs served on Hawaiian sweet rolls. Variations include the Sooo Cali (arugula, avocado, tomato, fried onions and spicy basil aioli), the Cowboy (smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and barbecue sauce, crispy onions) and the Free Bird (turkey dog, avocado, tomato, smoked bacon, miso ranch), and the menu offers vegan and vegetarian options as well. All meat items are hormone and antibiotic free.
The sausage menu features a variety of playful options, including Pig Lebowski (Polish kielbasa, fries, slaw, barbecue sauce) and Das Brat (bratwurst, caramelized onions, sauerkraut, spicy brown mustard), and the burger menu includes the all-encompassing Hangover burger (white American cheese, smoked bacon, chili, fried egg, mayo).
Sides include made-to-order tots, chili cheese fries and beer-battered onion rings.

The restaurant will also feature four wine and 24 beer taps, two of which will use nitrogen, resulting in especially creamy ales and stouts. The other 22 taps will poor a mix of local and obscure American craft beers.
The two plan to open three Dog Haus locations in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties over the next three years.
Vahe Issai said he was attracted to the tree-shaded patio of the 2,300-square-foot Belmont location, and the clock tower, the interior of which was previously covered and is now exposed after the renovation.
The space also features eight TVs, which will broadcast mostly sports games and music videos of the restaurant’s ’80s and ’90s-themed soundtrack.
Opening day is tentatively set for March 10. Visit doghaus.com for menu and updates.
