Thank you for featuring the CalMatters article “New fight over phonics” in the April 7 edition of the Daily Journal. I believe AB 1121 which would require phonics on schools should be passed because the science is settled. American Public Media did an entire story about the science of reading for further reading if anyone is interested.
While one size may not fit all, I also want to note that the science of reading fits most. Students should not be held back from learning to read. For those requiring extra support, the state provides assessments that would allow students to get individualized education programs. Again, this is a settled science and I hope everyone can support this bill.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Dunn. I’d add that we’ve seen and are still seeing the results from abandoning phonics. We can’t do worse than the current method of teaching students to read. I’d hope that we also make a return to riggerous coarses in riding, two. I mean, “rigorous courses in writing, too.”
