The long-standing Ampex sign in Redwood City has been taken down and is sitting in storage, waiting for a new home.

The letters were removed earlier this week and the entire apparatus should be removed by the end of next week for construction of Stanford’s new satellite campus to proceed.

Less than two years ago, local newspapers reported that Stanford is required to preserve the Ampex sign for 75 years. Apparently, “preserve” does not mean “leave in place and maintain.”

Thanks for this update. We had no idea this was happening! I have been in touch with the City and they say it was decided years ago. Interestingly, the RWC Historical Commission was against this from the beginning and were over-ruled somehow. There is much more coming on this and I will keep you posted. It is a "sign" that RWC and its leaders are trading away out heritage for too rapid development without regard to our heritage, infrastructure and quality of life. While the AMPEX sign is a small thing in many ways, it is a huge symbol of a massive problem unfolding before our eyes that we and future generations are paying for. More to come!
