A South San Francisco man who was shot by police after allegedly approaching them with a knife has been charged with assault, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The man, 28-year-old Luis Francisco-Monzo, allegedly moved at South San Francisco officers with a knife Dec. 8 after his mother had called the police for a wellness check, fearing he was suicidal.
When officers spoke with him to de-escalate the situation, he initially complied and approached them. Francisco-Manzo then allegedly brandished a knife and officers used a Taser, ordering him to drop the knife.
After more commands, the man allegedly charged at the officers with the knife raised.
Two officers fired at Francisco-Manzo and he was hit, though he survived the injuries. They are identified as Brendan Hart, who has been with the department for eight years, and Martin Corona, who has been with the department for 4 1/2 years.
