Editor,
I find Democrats a fascinating study in hypocrisy, so much so that I feel Websters should have a picture of a donkey to define it.
Editor,
I find Democrats a fascinating study in hypocrisy, so much so that I feel Websters should have a picture of a donkey to define it.
New York Mayor Mamdani said he called President Trump to protest the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduro, yet the honorable mayor has publicly stated he’d have Benjamin Netanyahu arrested should the Israeli come to New York City. In her own inimitable, word-salad style, Kamala Harris predictably excoriated Mr. Trump’s actions but has conveniently forgotten the Biden/Harris administration had offered a $25 million reward for the capture of — wait for it — one Nicholas Maduro. Those Democrats who orchestrated and participated in the “No King/Tyrants” protests are now publicly complaining about the removal of one. In a 2020 speech, Chuck Schumer excoriated Mr. Trump because Maduro was still in power, but now the esteemed senator cannot stop whining about his removal.
And, for those Dems who say Mr. Trump violated the law, I’d remind them of the saga of Panama’s Manuel Noriega, who, like Maduro, was under indictment. Mr. Noriega and his legal team made the same arguments, but, alas, he lost every one of them.
Are Democrats so blinded by ideology they can’t see the world is a better place when people like Maduro are brought to justice? For my Democrat friends, that question was a rhetorical one.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Marty, highlighting just a few instances (of many) of hypocrisy so prevalent with Democrats. But remember, these Democrats put the welfare of criminals and terrorists (and now a murderous drug kingpin in Maduro) over the American people. I’d say Democrats afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome have become blinded to common sense. I wonder if Amazon has a Democrat outrage of the day calender for sale. It would be a single page applicable to every day of the year which says, “Orange man bad.” All for $9.99. I'd bet it sells more copies than Kamala Harris's word salad extraordinaire known as "107 Days."
As I watch the myriad media reports across the world, including our provincial California, it is truly striking that virtually all Venezuelans who live in freedom countries support the removal. It sems the only ones protesting are those who have little or anything to do or may not even know where that country is. The same phony gang that marches in No King Day and in favor Hamas. Where are they now supporting the Iranians who are desperately trying to to dump their filthy Theocrats? These protesters are either mentally challenged or would have been a perfect quarry for Maduro.
John Marty has written an intelligent letter, and, as a life-long Democrat, I agree with almost all of the points that he makes.
It has been over 2 months since I last participated in the SMDJ online comments section. At that time I wrote the following:
“the pro-Trump partisans in this newspaper spend significant amounts of time rewriting these almost identical harangues day after day after day after day. Don’t even give them the time of day. It never fails to amuse me that they seem to think their logic is “ironclad” when the counterpoints are blatantly obvious to anyone who is not blinded by ideology.”
This parallels Mr. Marty’s theme above, but comes from the other side.
I see that the only two comments prior to mine here are from two of the “usual suspects” on the Trump side. Their persistent harangues succeed admirably in driving away public participation from this forum. Terrence Y in particular continues his obsessive daily practice of seeking to place his name on almost every item in the SMDJ’s “Recent Comments…” list.
A long time ago, our public education system tried to teach students that there is more than one side to each question. While I agree with the bulk of Mr. Marty’s letter above, this is NOT to say that there are ZERO counterpoints to “our, yes our, great President Trump’s” actions in Venezuela. My challenge to Mr. Marty is simple:
Can he write another Letter to the Editor listing what those downsides are? Or is each side in this debate so biased and blind that they can only defend their own side? We already know what the answer is for the usual denizens of this swamp, and there is little point engaging in a conversation with zero give and take.
This is the crux of the problem confronting our political system - we have let extremists on both ends of the spectrum take it over.
David - "Their persistent harangues succeed admirably in driving away public participation from this forum". Isn't it perhaps because they don't have valid counter points? I don't see anything new in their regurgitated, tepid responses other than the SOS TDS affliction. Not a single one can match Terence's diatribes whether you agree with him or not. Can those on the left, at least once, give our President credit for his accomplishments? The SF Chronicle carefully avoids any mention of Trump's successes but spends more time on silly transgender and district politics that lead nowhere. Even the generally leftist European news media are reluctantly acknowledging his phenomenal success on the world stage and only wished they had the equivalent of a 'Europe First" mentality. You have no idea what he has accomplished internationally, some positive and, for some, negative. But, he has upset the apple cart and I love it! Come to the realization of what a farmer said recently: I love my wife but I don't have to like everything she says or does. Signed, one of the Usual Suspects!
“Isn't it perhaps because they don't have valid counter points?” No, Dirk, it isn’t !!!
It's because they don’t want to waste their time arguing with fanatics who are possibly paid by some MAGA organization to badger opponents, spread falsehoods, and will never admit when their “great” President has made a mistake (because that would compromise their paycheck?). People have more important things to do with the years that they have left on this planet.
Since you do occasionally admit that Trump makes mistakes, I will say that there is obviously no question that Maduro was a “bad guy,” but it is also legitimate to question whether it is an unalloyed good for America to abandon its ideals and become the neighborhood bully in the Western Hemisphere once again, threatening Canada, Greenland, and Denmark, in addition to Latin America, and anyone else who happens to offend Trump. This behavior on our part clearly gives excuses to Putin and Xi Jinping to behave likewise in their “spheres of influence” (one sees the fingerprints of Steve Bannon and his counterpart in the USSR Aleksandr Dugin in this), and sets our world up for potentially disastrous consequences down the road. And now, after pulling off what was clearly a very successfully military tactical operation, Trump, in his braggadocio, wants to increase the military budget by half a trillion dollars or about 50% (!!!) from this year to next??? I think we clearly need to stop electing octogenarians to the Presidency.
That’s all for now. I’ll see you again in a few months - probably in a similar context… Terrence will undoubtedly have the last word, and “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a da…”
David - Maduro is an indicted drug baron and was not even a legitimate president of Venezuela. To compare snatching him from his bed with Trump's controversial overtures with respect to Canada, Greenland and Denmark is over the top. I disagree with Trump on those issues. Maduro, and by proxy, China, Russia, Iron and their lackies, was a serious threat to our nation. The way Trump is carefully handling this sticky issue and has managed thus far to avoid a civil war in that country while most of the Venezuelan expats are ecstatic. In your opinion, they don't matter, do they?
Dirk, you know better than that. You yourself turned sour on Cheney and this is Cheney 2.0.
If this is about drugs (or weapons of mass destruction), why release the Ex-president of Honduras who was already convicted of smuggling 400t of them into this country. If drugs were the issue, that Honduras guy and his brother would be sitting in US prison.
If this was about ONE bad head of state of some "shithole country" ... Trump made clear he does not care much for these people anyways. He doesn't even care about his own people. He was totally fine with a Saudi prince chopping up a US journalist.
This is the Dick Cheney playbook: trouble at home, start a war.
This is about Approval Ratings, this is about lowering GASOLINE prices (fracking is too expensive), this is about lowering energy cost (coal, nuclear are too expensive), this is about the next election, this is about the Epstein files. This is Wag-The-Dog.
But here is the problem: "you break it, you own it". So now what?
Dirk, perhaps I did not make myself clear. I agreed firstly with most of the points made by John Marty in his letter. I never said that I have any sympathy for Maduro and agree with all of the points you repeated about how bad he and his cohorts were/are.
However, what I am trying to say is that Trump in his second administration has had a pattern of bullying countries in the Western Hemisphere, and this latest successful raid into Venezuela seems to be amping him up for more, not less, of this behavior. He immediately followed it up with threats against Columbia, Mexico, Cuba, and Greenland while also talking about a gigantic increase in U.S. military spending.
Whether he is handling this masterfully or not remains to be seen.
Trump also seems to be enamored of U.S. power during the McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt administrations, but seems to forget that the worldwide, big power, “might is right” gunboat diplomacy of those days (and I am talking mainly about the race between European powers now - the US at the time was just coming onto the scene) led the world to World War I. The botched settlement of that war then led to WWII.
I think that Trump is playing with fire when he thinks that he can get away with doing whatever he wants in this hemisphere without this behavior impacting events in Europe and Asia. Stephen Miller’s statements to Jake Tapper the other night also give an indication of how blatant this hegemonic policy is becoming in the Trump administration. Events like these risk turning our country into a predator nation in the eyes of the world instead of a guardian of democracy. If the 50% “War” department budget increase is because Trump realizes that he will need even more force to try to deter wars on all three fronts (the “Donroe” front, Europe, & Asia), then one immediately understands why one has not seen much of J.D. Vance lately who has been a proponent of keeping the U.S. out of “forever wars.” Even wacky Marjorie Taylor Greene is concerned.
It is not “over the top” to mention Maduro in connection to the above because, although he was clearly a bad guy and many Venezuelans and others in Latin America are rejoicing that he is gone, the initial success of this operation may likely lead to other, much more significant, problems down the road. It is too early for the Trump side to celebrate anything other than the successful completion of the raid. Kudos are due for the military prowess displayed, but the prospect clearly remains that this success might lead to overplaying one’s hand, and Trump’s subsequent threats are already bringing major condemnation from several of our allies. Only a short while after posting my previous comment, I also read that we had seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker en route from the Caribbean and going past Iceland… Unfortunately I just don’t share that sense of Trump’s infallibility that many of the MAGA people take as the gospel truth.
“Isn't it perhaps because they don't have valid counter points?” Yes, Dirk, very true!!! Hey DavidKristofferson (if that’s who you really are), emotional outbursts and rampant hypocrisy are not valid counter points. Leftists don’t want to waste their time arguing because they know their arguments are built on houses of cards. As this and other “Usual Suspects” have exposed, time and time again. People do have more important things to do, like control their Trump Derangement Syndrome and focus on facts instead of furry and inflatable costume loitering parties known as No Kings. That’s all the responses for now. I’ll see you again in a few months after your hibernation is over – probably in a similar context…I will undoubtedly have the last word because you’re unable to defend your stances. Have a Trump-tastic day! BTW, what happened to your complaints about meeting me in person or folks using pseudonyms? No longer pet peeves? Or maybe you’re saving for next time?
Dirk, isn’t it “cute” how some fanatics keep begging for attention by inserting themself into every conversation? When such a fanatic claims (with monotonously predictable regularity) that other people support positions which they don’t and never have, said person should not be surprised when they are ignored. Why waste time trying to have a conversation with someone who is only interested in scoring debating points for their “infallible” side by any means possible?
Hilarious. Here we go again with DavidKristofferrson writing 300+ words to attack his list of “usual suspects” and everyone who doesn’t agree with him whilst attempting to lecture us on how an LTE should be written. Hey Mr. Kristofferrson, why don’t you submit an LTE that is unbiased and encompasses both sides?
It would be constructive to spend your 300+ or however many words to explain why you and fellow Democrats continue to support Democrats who prioritize criminals and terrorists over American citizens? Or why you and fellow Democrats don’t call out or stop voting for Democrats who celebrate a political assassination. Or why you and fellow Democrats support biological males competing against biological females. Everyone on the left is afraid to defend these Democrats but I have confidence you’ll have the courage to step up. Or will you let me and our dear readers down? After all, it has been over 2 months since you last participated. BTW, if you don’t want to see identical harangues day after day after day after day, then please convince folks to stop with their easily debunked fake news and lies against our (yes, our) great President Trump. Have a Trump-tastic day! Signed, one of the other Usual Suspects.
