Driver says she can't 'afford' filling tank as gas prices spike in US

As gas prices surge in California, the state's strongest anti-price gouging law is sidelined. Gas has topped $5.30 a gallon statewide as the Iran war increases global oil prices. The 2023 law would have allowed regulators cap refinery profits and punish price gouging. But the California Energy Commission voted last August to delay the rules for five years. Supporters say Californians face a captive market with fewer refineries and limited supply options. Critics warn profit caps could push refiners out and trigger shortages. Refiners are already leaving the state because California has committed to phasing out fossil fuels by 2045.
