Art Without An Artist: Can AI Be Considered An Artist?

Friday, March 20, 2026 | 7:30 – 9:30 pm | CSM Theatre (Building 3) | Free Admission

Join Us for #37 in Professor Mohsen Janatpour’s Series of Annual Presentations!

Presented by the Associated Students of College of San Mateo and CSM’s Math/Science Division.

Artificial intelligence has become part of almost everything we do, especially in the creation of art. The speed at which art is made has increased tremendously. In this talk, I want to explore whether we can think of artificial intelligence as an artist. I’m not talking about artists using AI as a tool to create art—I’m okay with that. What I really want to ask is: Can AI itself be considered an artist? I conclude the presentation with an exhibition of some of my non-AI-generated artwork. If the weather allows, we will invite the audience, thanks to the San Mateo County Astronomical Society and the CSM Astronomy Department, to a telescopic observation of the sky. With assistance from experts, you will enjoy a stunning view of celestial wonders.
