Millbrae Mayor Ann Schneider has expressed worry a proposed Bayside flood barrier from SFO to San Mateo would have a detrimental affect on her city’s Bayfront, despite assurances by project leadership that a barrier would be the most effective way to protect against sea-level rise.

It would also reduce or remove residents from federally required flood maps, which require costly insurance, proponents contend.

I see we finally have an environmentalist with brains in our midst. She is quite rare and I pray that she prevails over the chicken-little One-Shoreline cabal. Let's hope that she is a catalyst for overturning the foolish thinking that sea walls need to be built for a possible sea level rise decades from now. Pure folly. I feel for the hapless residents of Foster City whose Bay views have been destroyed by a Berlin-type wall.

I agree that OneShoreline seems to have preemptively arrived at their floodgate idea and is proceeding with EIR before the public was notified or given a chance for input. They need to go back to evaluating other more natural alternatives. Studies of seawalls have demonstrated the resulting tidal action erodes underlying sediments, worsening tidal impacts. Elsewhere around the world experts are recreating wetlands as a more sustainable buffer with the added benefit of enhancing biodiversity and providing wildlife habitat.
