Burlingame’s past and present intersect downtown, as a new tile mural pays homage to the community’s history while indulging the modern desire to make a statement on social media.

The Burlingame Historical Society celebrated Friday, July 20, the unveiling of a massive art installation comprised of more than 3,100 tiles on the back of a new building at 240 Lorton Ave.

[cool] As stated eloquently by the Association of Public Art: " Public art can express community values, enhance our environment, transform a landscape, heighten our awareness, or question our assumptions. Placed in public sites, this art is there for everyone, a form of collective community expression. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world – the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are." Timothy Hooker

Sorry, MDR, for not giving my specific reasons for my not being enamored of the mural. I was trying to be as diplomatic as possible. The fact is that I find it neither aesthetically pleasing nor of any significant artistic merit. Obviously, that's my opinion...just as those who love it are expressing their opinions.

I can't be the only longtime Burlingame resident that is not enchanted by this mural. I am curious: how are things like this approved? Why is its appearance a complete surprise to many of us?

really - it seems a very nice inoffensive mural, Im looking forward to seeing it in person. your comment would be far more effective if you stated what you dislike about it
