Editor,
I found the juxtaposition of two of the front page articles on Dec. 16 interesting, both about El Camino Real.
“County transit leaders weigh in on El Camino upgrades” was about the Grand Boulevard Initiative, and the need for prioritizing the safety of all road users, “to improve biking, transit and pedestrian access ... from Daly City to Palo Alto,” and that some communities are prioritizing protected bike lanes. As a cyclist, the only on street bike lanes that are safe are protected class IV bike lanes.
The second article was “Burlingame’s big dig” about its El Camino Real Renewal project. This project has no end to end safe cycling along it. How can this be? How can Burlingame ignore cyclist safety? How can Caltrans, which owns and controls what happens to El Camino, permit Burlingame to continue to place cyclists lives at risk?
Roads need to be safe for all users, not just cars. Cyclists deserve to be safe traveling on El Camino. It’s a shame that Burlingame could have addressed this now, but instead will need to waste taxpayer money fixing it later when the Grand Boulevard work is undertaken.

Thanks for your letter, Giuliano. It would be more convincing if cyclists paid their fair share, or any share, in paying for bicycle infrastructure. As for wasting taxpayer money, perhaps we can poll the folks on the Grand Boulevard where they feel $750 million to $1 billion of taxpayer money should be spent on. They’re the most affected, not cyclists.
